SPECIAL CONNECTIONS

A Substance Abuse Program for Pregnant Substance Using Women

....helping women to have a healthy pregnancy, and a healthy, drug-free baby.

Special Connections is a drug and alcohol assessment and treatment program for pregnant women who have a history of alcohol or other substance abuse.
Goals of Special Connections
  • To produce a healthy infant from the pregnancy

  • To reduce or stop the substance using behavior of the pregnant woman during and after her pregnancy

  • To maintain the family unit -the mother, infant, and other family members and to promote a safe child rearing environment

Program Services
  • In-depth multi-disciplinary assessment of pregnant woman

  • Individualized intensive treatment plan

  • Individualized counseling

  • Group counseling

  • Information on nutrition, infant development, parenting, child safety, and health care

  • Urine screening and monitoring

  • Referral to appropriate aftercare and ongoing support

Eligibility

Treatment services are available for pregnant women who are Medicaid eligible.

All clients must:
  • Be medically verified as pregnant

  • Acknowledge the use of substance use during pregnancy

  • Participate in appropriate prenatal care during pregnancy

Specialized Women’s Services

A program for women with dependent children, and women who have completed the Special Connections Program. This program works with women and their children to develop coping skills, life skills, and life management skills. Group, family and individual sessions are provided throughout the minimum 12-week course on a sliding fee scale.
Referral Process

Health, mental health, education, law enforcement and other human service providers who work with pregnant women are encouraged to refer any substance using pregnant woman to a Special Connections’ site for a risk assessment. Special Connections’ providers will work closely with other community service agencies to strengthen treatment success for the pregnant woman and to enhance the outcome of a healthier baby. Clients needing services beyond the scope of Special Connections will be referred to the appropriate treatment and service providers.

Cost

Treatment services are provided for women on Medicaid or eligible for Medicaid. Services for non-Medicaid eligible pregant women, are provided on a sliding fee scale.
